Provision of Blood Products

P-First offers a comprehensive range of blood products tailored to meet the specific needs of various patients, including those in emergency situations, patients with frequent transfusion reactions, neonates, and patients requiring CMV-safe or irradiated blood products. The available products include:

Whole Blood.
Whole Blood is the simplest and most direct form of blood product, collected directly from donors without being separated into its components. It contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, plasma, and clotting factors. Whole blood transfusion is primarily used in situations requiring volume replacement in patients, such as those experiencing significant blood loss due to trauma or surgery
Red Cell Concentrate (RCC).
Red Cell Concentrate, commonly referred to as packed red blood cells (PRBCs), is produced by centrifuging whole blood to remove a portion of the plasma. This process concentrates the red blood cells, which are essential for transporting oxygen throughout the body. RCC transfusions are indicated for patients suffering from anemia, significant blood loss, or those undergoing surgery who need to increase their red blood cell mass without excess plasma, reducing the risk of volume overload.
Random Donor Platelets.
Random Donor Platelets are collected from whole blood donations. Each unit comes from a single donor, and multiple units are often pooled to achieve a therapeutic dose. These platelet transfusions are used to prevent or treat bleeding in patients with platelet deficiencies or dysfunction, such as those undergoing chemotherapy, with bone marrow disorders, or experiencing acute blood loss.
Mega Dose Platelets.
Mega Dose Platelets, or single donor platelets, are collected through apheresis from a single donor, providing a higher platelet count per unit. This method is efficient and reduces the patients exposure to multiple donors, lowering the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections and alloimmunization. Mega dose platelets are especially useful in patients with thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) who are not responsive to random donor platelets or those who require frequent platelet transfusions.
Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP).
Fresh Frozen Plasma is the liquid portion of blood, frozen soon after collection to preserve clotting factors. FFP is used to treat conditions involving coagulation factor deficiencies, such as liver disease, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), or massive transfusion protocols. It provides all coagulation factors except platelets, making it crucial for patients needing an immediate correction of clotting factor deficiencies.
Cryoprecipitate.
Cryoprecipitate is derived from thawing FFP at low temperatures, which precipitates a protein-rich fraction containing high levels of fibrinogen, factor VIII, factor XIII, von Willebrand factor, and fibronectin. It is specifically used in conditions such as Hemophilia A, von Willebrands Disease, and hypofibrinogenemia, where specific clotting factor deficiencies can be targeted with this concentrated product.
Cryo Poor Plasma.
Cryo Poor Plasma is the supernatant plasma remaining after the cryoprecipitate has been removed. It still contains most clotting factors but in lower concentrations than FFP. Its primary use is for patients who require plasma transfusion but for whom the high levels of fibrinogen in FFP or cryoprecipitate could be problematic, such as those at risk for thrombosis or those with a need for volume expansion without excessive coagulation factor supplementation.
